Bruised, Bemused And Disabused – A Villanelle
BRUISED, BEMUSED AND DISABUSED
Everything around me looks so very strange
My poor heart has been through the blender
Seems the only thing safe to trust is change
Bells and vows and rings to exchange
They’re playing our song: “Love Me Tender”
Everything around me looks so very strange
How sweet the fresh taste of each interchange
An angel filling life with her beauty and splendour
Seems the only thing safe to trust is change
Drifted off, faded away, withdrew out of range
Whatever I did would just offend her
Everything around me looks so very strange
Now I’m a box gathering dust at the post exchange
And the Presley song is “Return To Sender”
Seems the only thing safe to trust is change
A vast empty chasm, a mountain range
She’s gouged out then piled up to defend her
Everything around me looks so very strange
Seems the only thing safe to trust is change

Impressive poem, Ben – I enjoyed the form, and the sound of it, and also the mention of the two Elvis songs. Can also relate to the content…

And only now after several passes had I spotted the error in line 17. Big shameful blushes and a correction. 😳 I quite like the challenge of the villanelle format and bringing Presley into an essentially seventeenth/nineteenth context amuses me. I forgot to note that it is a reply to a Weekly Writing Prompt:

As it was issued in August last year I am clearly seriously behind. 😀

You are so perfect at Villanelle. It is beautiful.

Thank you kindly. 🙂
A little sad also, I think, but then the villanelle form tends to pull the writer (and so the reader) towards the melancholy.

A sad reflection Ben of how relationships do not always work out as we intended..
on a lighter note.. Enjoy your weekend, May the Sun Shine and may Fun and laughter reach inside your heart.. ❤ Hugs Sue

I’m a little behind but my good wishes remain timeless (apart from the occasional storm 😉 ).

The reality of some relationships only force us to work harder for the ones we still have before us.
Thank you for sharing this with me, Ben.
