About

Sweet juicy jazzy jackanapes
Crusading king of Fairy Hill
Immortal motley troubadour
Breezed into town with time to kill
To put the free back in free fall
Peal forth the vow in disavow
Ah, but I was so much Adler then
I’m Junger than that now

TV sophists spewed skewered truth
Cut Ethos, Pathos, Logos dead
No musketeering buccaneers
But lame tame talking heads instead
With propaganda for proper geese
He cackled at their sacred cow
Ah, but I was so much Adler then
I’m Junger than that now

Provincial ham let figments strut
While stuttering beneath his breath
“Wh-wherefore art thou Juliet?”
His sad performance died the death
Outrageous fortune took the blame
While it was she who took the bow
Ah, but I was so much Adler then
I’m Junger than that now

Soon leery learned the golden rule
In prison’s schoolyard hide and seek
Found respite from the siren call
Played truantly eight days a week
With John and Paul, and Pete, and Bob
Unlatched the lightning bolt of Tao
Ah, but I was so much Adler then
I’m Junger than that now

Embraced the peaceful warrior’s way
Through battlefields of poison dust
Explaining to the deaf and blind
“In heinous blasphemy you trust
Cool off your mumbo jumbo jets
‘Thou shalt not kill’ and that means thou”
Ah, but I was so much Adler then
I’m Junger than that now

With righteous anger, sanctioned style
Refusal to be compromised
By inchworms who would take a mile
Their dress sense, world view, he despised
“Stomp out the unacceptable!”
His motto and so solemn vow
Ah, but I was so much Adler then
I’m Junger than that now

  2. I found you through Randall’s blog and I am so glad I did, Ben. I will be taking a look around, and I know I love what I’ve seen so far… To tell you the truth, my blogroll needs a serious cleanup and I think today’s the day. Out with the dead wood to make room for new (to me, at least) exciting writing. Go well.

  5. Hello Ben, thank you for finding me and sharing with me your piece on “Millie and Me” in relation to my poem “Wanted: Obsessed Male” Turbo is my first dog, a childhood dream come true; every moment together is special to me – those connections to certain animals are indescribable yet so inspiring and so very valuable.

    • Millie generally lives with my step-daughter but stays with us fairly regularly. I wrote and posted my piece on 16th November. It was such a coincidence to find your poem that I thought I would “Comment” on yours as they complement one another so well. I thought your readers might enjoy another facet of the human/canine relationship, and I especially liked that the genders were swapped! 🙂

    • Thank you for your appreciation.

If you want to develop a style of writing that you feel more comfortable with, the only advice I can give you really is to keep reading others’ and lots and lots of practice. It’s also good to have a decent “shit detector”, but without being over-critical of yourself. 🙂 Rereading a piece several times, especially over a period, often allows you to see things that could do with either changing or removing before you launch it into the world.

If you want to get serious, there are always writing courses, and/or you can look around for a local writers’ group to join. You might also think about becoming a “follower” at http://suehealy.org.

      Good luck!

    • What a lovely comment to find after a very frustrating day when my e-mail client was down. 🙂 . Thank you so much for your kind words, BlueGem. If you do come across anything helpful in your life then that is a bonus for me. 🙂 My poetry is a bit if a hodge-podge really. If you are interested in attempts at wisdom, try “The Book Of Guff” instead.

  9. Ethel and I have nominated you for a Versatile Blogger Award. You’ll have to go to fourwindowspress if you don’t know about it, and if you follow the instructions you’re a winner. We are mainly trying to let you know how much we honor you and your work, so you may or may not choose to accept the award. That’s up to you, but we certainly think you are worthy of more than this one gesture of thanks for you and your poetry.

  14. Well, I love you already because you don’t do Facebook or Twitter–and apparently you’ve edited your “about”, and you expect people to “READ” what’s here if they’re interested in gleaning information. Also, if Betty Hayes Albright gives you a nod, I sit up and take notice–she and I are new “sisters-of-the-sea”, having met here in blogville.

Am very curious about the Rudolph Award–mainly because I didn’t know awards would be a constant part of blogging at WP. I’ve been asking around as to where they all originate–and can I just dream one up and start handing it out too???

Okay, I’ll have to come back for a longer read another day–the headache is making typing impossible. Regards to you–you’re welcome to visit my blog (no promises). God bless you today!

The motto is lifted from a French film I saw many years ago. Sadly, I don’t remember which. I thought it was one of Godard’s, but I can’t find it. In the film one of the characters says this line several times and then proceeds to tell a quite different story each time. 🙂

    Annie ❤

    • Thank you kindly, Annie. I generally don’t participate in awards these days, mainly due to the time it takes up. But a dragon! Who can refuse? 🙂

Here’s a dragon poem of mine in return:-

      DRAGON HEART

So still she lies, as if some shell abandoned, blear-eyed from sleep
Shipwrecked, abandoned to some soggy dotage caked in mire
Be not deceived, imagining vacuum where once was fire
Thoughts and feelings spark yet, drift dreamily, aimless, ancient, deep

Take heed, both wise and foolish souls; fair warning: t’is best to creep
Past lightly, with harnessed breath; waken not the dragon’s ire
No less than fearsome monster, prone to bouts of fey desire
Exceeding duties as guardian, this dragon now feeds on sheep

Protection for that heart of mine once long ago rudely spoiled
That dragon, turned to basilisk, has festered and gone awry
Too far too many empty nights left red-eyed the dragonfly
Wound itself tighter and tighter till inextricably coiled

A dusty heirloom, tucked away, out of sight, a feathered wing
This fragile heart, free from defence, defiant, still dares to sing

Instead, I’ve pointed readers in the direction of three of my favorite poets here at WordPress. Needless to say, you are one of them.

    Liked by 1 person

    • That is most gracious of you. And no worries. I was tagged to play the Three Quotes game a while back – see the comments just above – by The Secret Keeper {http://thesecretkeeper.net/} and have picked the three quotations and the nine tagees, though I have yet to find the time to write up and schedule three posts involved. 😦

You say that you are quite new as a reader/writer on WordPress. Therefore as a small return for nominating me, here’s a place you can find 7 of my favourite pieces of my own, all of which date from a while back, so you won’t have seen them before, I think. I hope you will enjoy them, Ken.

Travel peacefully and with worthy companions.
