The Pilgrim’s Progress (Republished)

THE PILGRIM’S PROGRESS

Will I reattain as it was written
The ocean where crystals shatter and drip
A will-o’-the-wisp with magic lantern
The westering shrouds of a mourning ship?

Will I be arrested on the waters
Carried off to the strand of the dead
Among the willows by the river
Where the grass is scattered and the shadows are fled?

The quality of majesty in a jealous god
To leave an amnesty in his will
Miscellaneous chaos still takes its toll
The cannons sound across the hill

The smoking candle, the sounding bell
Written and arrested as it shall be
While one skull wanders in search of a ring
The other stares open-mouthed at me

Home At Last

HOME AT LAST

Distracted actors
Mumbling along lost
Until we give up

Adversity

ADVERSITY

This one’s for Audrey (and many another).

I hit the road
It hit me back
We paused a mo

Head Scratcher

HEAD SCRATCHER

Left home, went due West
Crossed two mighty oceans and

Ripened tomatoes,

“Beetroot and radish,
Spring onion and watercress …
Love them one and all.

Only cucumber,
Being bitter by nature,
Disagrees with me.”

Lonesome Preacher

LONESOME PREACHER

Who teaches such sturdy lies
concerning history –
thin ice six thousand years

What may or may not be …

As the planet’s crust thin eggshell floats
grinding against itself
in minor disasters

O how we tightrope
over the fiery deep
suspended in the cold of space

YOU ARE IN THIS WORLD
BUT YOU ARE NOT OF THIS WORLD
AS SHE IS NOT OF YOU
COME OUT OF HER

Seeking therein
the source of sound
yet not to preach silence

You want to know …

Have I brought you enough …

Have I suffered such pain to bring you so little
tied to the flesh
in bonds of steel

WILL YOU TAKE ME WITH YOU
WHEN YOU LEAVE ME
WHEN I TELL YOU
I’M NOT THERE

Orpheus himself seeking, maze adrift
steel corridors interlocking
through all dimensions

To follow what …
