Lost In Translation: Shadorma

LOST IN TRANSLATION

I love you
A complex concept
To try to
Get across
When we know so few words of
Another’s language

Heresy (28a)

HERESY

Explosive
This marriage of words
Half-closed doors
Fly open
Naked, virgin thoughts scamper
Hither and thither

Just Words

JUST WORDS

They call it karma
Those who call themselves Buddhists
Yet love needs no name

Unwitting Perjury

UNWITTING PERJURY

Our experience
Is bent out of proportion
By the act of thought

Another

ANOTHER

Another page then
Savaged, ravaged

No pristine virgin
No fallow field

Tell me for why
Is it just rattling

The bars of the cage
Of this our language

Busy busy restraining
Our breathless words

For after all, for after all
Who was it, who was it

Put the me in meaning
Or the em in poem?

Stumped

STUMPED

Old as I am
And olderness coming
Day by day
Vocabulary rotting
Wasting away

Detach, detach
Who needs the grief?
The foolishness
Of vain denial

So much of life
One brief foray
Mainly wasted on
Sogenannten
Employment

Sat here now
In mid creation
Tip of the tongue
But spittleless

There’s a good word for it
But what it is
Is another matter
Sit patiently
Hopefully

Let’s Just Pass Over T S Eliot, Shall We?

LET’S JUST PASS OVER T S ELIOT, SHALL WE?

While Keats
Is able to
Metamorphose
Into steak

And Yeats
Is able to
Transform himself
Into yeast

You must agree it’s
Hardly surprising
That I tend to “nag”
Crafty Hermes*

Since all
I can manage
To turn into
Is a “bean”

Flourishing

FLOURISHING

How large a Wow! should I
need if, self-encumbered no more,
re-enfolded within the unassuming fold,

reintroduced to the misremembered,
yet moved to articulate? Let me see …
And I see daffodil, foxglove, rose, lily, lotus …

and so on and on over the hills and far away;
I see the job’s already competently in hand then;
liplessly, handlessly, mindfully. So Wow! anyway.

Ineffable

INEFFABLE

To describe it
Would be to deceive you
To explain it
Would be to mislead you
Those who would swear by it
Never do
They know it is ineffable

A Poem That’s Hard To Read Out Loud

A POEM THAT’S HARD TO READ OUT LOUD

Woke again
…..(I keep on doing that, I see)
To find myself
…..(Except, of course, I keep getting distracted)
Amazed
…..(Which is to say I have no idea where I am or how to get out)

I seem to be
…..(René went out for lattes but he’s been gone ages)
Unexpectedly
…..(Mainly, I admit, because I wasn’t paying proper attention)
On some kind of quest
…..(And a quest, of course, is only the first part of a question)

According to the job sheet
…..(Mine not to reason why and all that)
I’m supposed to slay this dragon, right
…..(And me with these shooting pains all up me left leg all the time)
And rescue the princess
…..(Come on, she’s never gonna take a second look at me)

We all talk nonsense
…..(I read that in a book, I think)
When the dream is upon us
…..(Does that mean I’m not awake after all?)
So when they ask me how I feel about you
…..(As if they really cared anyway)

I say Kpqcahz Rlmxxlc Duybjrq
…..(As if any of the languages I make up can do it justice)
