Is this a party game I’m not aware of the involves herring? It sounds as if it might be a little more risqué than what I had in mind here; that moment when a flirtation changes into something more committed. 😉
And as for sardines …

No, the herring was not part of the game you speak of, it is just part of the Hunger Game. 😉
Missed the reference. The book is sitting in a “to read” pile a couple of feet away and I’ve seen the film but my memory failed to be jogged, I’m afraid.
