From Mall To Mall

FROM MALL TO MALL

“Walk lightly upon the Earth
……….Live in balance and harmony”
………………..Said those who understood
……….Anathema to these long lost sheep
………………..Transformed to ravenous wolves

Faced with “Set my people free”
……….“Re-enslave them, but more subtly”
………………..(After all they are a lesser breed)
……….Agreed the greedy bold-faced butchermen
………………..So now regard then these untermenschen

All “If … then …” thinking derailed
……….Sidetracked into a hypnomatic trance
………………..Of fear panic eased only be consumption
……….Only heavy treads penetrate the miasma now
………………..Lockstep by far preferred – a storm-troop tromp

Herding us woodenfootedly
……….Left, right, left, right, left
………………..From Christmas to Valentine’s
……….From Valentine’s to Easter and on
………………..From mall to mall to doomsday

  3. I have decided, Ben Naga, that greed is now the most valued value, at least in American political circles. George W. Bush after 911 said, “go shop,” and so the American public did. Even now, after the Great Recession which was clearly brought about by the sucking dry of the gullible by the Towers of Mammon and Bank of American, the mantra, free market, resonates into the bone and makes politicians seers, saviors, and infallible. “untermenschen” indeed.

    • Written in a moment of bitterness. Happily there is more than that to our story, as I recall in moments of hopefulness.

And as for the institutionalisation of greed, I track the roots back to some fundamental changes under the Reagan/Thatcher regime.

  5. While I enjoy giving myself, or others, a gift or a bit of extra celebration every now and again, I find it so dreadful when people get trapped in your described “consumerist nightmare” that they can’t get out of and never should have fallen into in the first place.
