FLIES

One fly
On either side of a pane of glass
Each one crawling
Concentratedly searching
For a way through this invisible
But so tangible barrier
To its freedom

Neither
Seems to notice the other
And so is not disheartened
Or amused
To see the vanity of it all
Still less consider what then
If the glass is but a mirror

So people too
At liberty within the boundaries of their minds
Yet feel themselves imprisoned
And long to escape
Into the freedom they have made
Of another’s prison
And this they call love

    Not sure what I mean, or how I mean. A symbol of entrapment perhaps, perhaps trapped in one’s own image, one’s own love yet another’s is desired?

      Just an ironic rhetorical question. I was meaning to say that the fact that love is often a prison is self-evident. (At least to a jaded, embittered, cynical or simply experienced person. 🙂 )

    Ok, so – when I started reading this, I thought it was a cool image and (always the cynic) thought to myself, “I hope he just makes a good description and doesn’t try to go all ‘deep'” (nothing to do with you as a writer, just my regular reaction because oh, how many good poems are ruined by trying to turn good ideas into more than what they are!) so I was a little worried when I hit the line “so people too” … but then it was *awesome*! “into the freedom they have made/of another’s prison”? Brilliant. Really excellent piece. Love it.

    I first thought flies? Yuck! But then you made it come out so powerful and beautiful. Then the fly part made sense. You do such a wonderful and stunning job on your poems.

      I really feel understood and appreciated, which is not too common, so I am very grateful.

      I am sure you recognise my experience and background in psychology and counselling and the contribution it makes to the things I write. And, like yourself, I am always hoping that my writing will be of assistance to fellow seekers and strugglers.

    Excellent! One person achievement of freedom depending on the sacrifice of another’s freedom. This is a very astute and important point!
